You must have worked for the foreign company for at least 1 out of the past 3 years in a managerial or executive position and the foreign company must have been operating for at least 1 year. L-1 visas are granted up to 2 years at a time and may be renewed for a total of 7 years. The L-1A is for executives/managers and the L-1B is for specialized knowledge workers. If setting up a new office, then the visa is granted for one year. The type of business may be completely different from the foreign company.
